Sustaining and Evolving an Encore Career Over a Decade

An encore career often lasts ten years or more. Sustaining meaning and energy across that span is its own skill. The role you launch with is rarely the role you keep, and the wind-down deserves as much attention as the launch. This applied course addresses the longer arc. By the end of this course you will be able to manage energy and workload through a long encore, evolve your role as interests and capacities change, integrate the encore with travel, family, and personal pursuits, and plan an eventual wind-down that honors what the work has meant to you. What you will learn: - How to manage energy across years including pacing, vacations, and seasonal rhythms - How to recognize when a role needs to shift in focus, scope, or audience - How to integrate encore work with travel, family time, and personal projects - How to handle health changes, caregiving demands, or other life events that affect work - How to mentor or build a successor where relevant to your role - How to plan a wind-down over months or years rather than abruptly - How to integrate the work into your sense of legacy and ongoing identity after it ends The course is structured around six applied modules. Each produces a written artifact: an energy management plan, a role evolution sketch, a life integration plan, a transitions plan, a mentorship or succession plan, and a wind-down outline. This course is written for people already in encore work or expecting to be soon. By the end you will move from launching a second act to running one over a decade, and the choices you make along the way will reflect a deliberate plan rather than fatigue or accident.
