18 703 Modern Algebra Spring 2013

Do you want to move beyond basic arithmetic and explore the fundamental structures that govern mathematics, computer science, and engineering? Modern Algebra provides the essential tools for deep mathematical thinking and advanced problem-solving. By the end of this course, you will have a solid conceptual grasp of abstract algebraic structures, enabling you to recognize and apply these concepts to problems involving symmetry, coding theory, and computational algorithms. What you'll learn: * Understand the axioms and key properties defining groups, subgroups, and group actions. * Apply fundamental theorems like Lagrange's Theorem to classify and analyze finite structures. * Master the construction and properties of rings, ideals, and quotient rings. * Define and work with fields, including the practical application of finite fields in error correction and cryptography. * Practice rigorous mathematical proof writing and abstract conceptualization skills necessary for advanced study. This text-based course guides you step-by-step through foundational definitions and proofs, followed by practical examples and written exercises that build your algebraic intuition. This course is designed for absolute beginners in abstract mathematics. No prior knowledge of modern algebra or advanced proofs is required.
