About this course
Maintaining impeccable housekeeping standards during a single busy weekend is a logistical challenge. Maintaining them consistently over months and years, through staff turnover, peak periods, renovations, and shifting guest expectations, is a management discipline. This course addresses the longer-term leadership and quality management dimensions of running a housekeeping department — the aspects that separate a smoothly functioning team from one that relies entirely on the executive housekeeper's personal oversight.
By the end of this course you will be able to develop a quality assurance program for a housekeeping department, design and deliver structured onboarding and ongoing training for room attendants, manage performance conversations with supervisors and front-line staff, analyze trends in guest satisfaction data related to room cleanliness, and propose evidence-based improvements to housekeeping procedures.
What you will learn:
- Quality assurance frameworks: tiered inspection systems, frequency planning, and trend tracking
- Training design for housekeeping: onboarding structure, demonstration methods, and competency sign-off
- Performance management in high-turnover environments: setting expectations, feedback conversations, and documentation
- Guest satisfaction analysis: interpreting cleanliness scores, comment patterns, and complaint types
- Managing peak demand: room block strategies, contractor staff integration, and communication protocols
- Renovation and refurbishment housekeeping: deep-clean planning, pre- and post-opening checklists, and new-product rollout
- Sustainability in housekeeping operations: linen reuse programs, chemical reduction, and waste management
- Department reporting upward: how to present housekeeping performance to general management
The course is structured around extended case studies from three hotel properties facing different challenges: a mid-scale city hotel managing high staff turnover, a resort property preparing for a full refurbishment, and a luxury property responding to declining cleanliness scores. Each case includes management decisions and outcomes, followed by analysis and reflection exercises. A training plan template and a quality review report format are provided.
This course is suitable for executive housekeepers, rooms division managers, and aspiring heads of housekeeping with some departmental experience. This course is educational in nature and does not substitute for formal management qualifications or mandatory compliance training.
