Elder Care Across the Long Arc: Advanced Dementia Support, End-of-Life Care, and a Caregiving Career

The caregivers who make the greatest difference in the lives of older adults — and who sustain satisfying, long-term careers in aging services — are those who bring not just procedural competence but genuine relational depth. They understand the behavioral expressions of advanced dementia without fear or frustration. They can support a family through the final weeks of a loved one's life with presence and equanimity. And they have a vision for their own professional growth that keeps them motivated and progressing over years, not just months. By the end of this course you will be able to apply a range of non-pharmacological behavioral management strategies for challenging dementia behaviors, describe the principles and practices of comfort-focused end-of-life care in a home setting, recognize caregiver burnout and apply protective self-care strategies, and outline the career development pathway from companion care toward supervisory and specialist roles in aging services. What you will learn: - Behavioral expressions of dementia: understanding sundowning, agitation, wandering, and refusal of care as communication - Non-pharmacological approaches: redirection, validation therapy, sensory engagement, and routine as stabilizer - Advanced dementia physical care: nutritional support in late stages, skin integrity, positioning, and comfort measures - Palliative and comfort care principles: the shift from curative to comfort goals and what it means in daily practice - End-of-life physical changes: recognizing the signs of the dying process to support family and communicate calmly - Supporting family caregivers: the emotional and practical role of the professional caregiver alongside a family in grief - Caregiver self-care and burnout prevention: recognizing compassion fatigue and sustaining professional resilience - Career development in aging services: CNA certification, specialized dementia programs, supervisory roles, and gerontology education This course is built around extended case studies: a caregiver supporting a client in the middle-to-late stage transition of Alzheimer's disease, a home care team managing the final weeks of a client's life with family coordination, and a caregiver reflecting on a year of complex care and planning their professional development. Behavioral response worksheets, a self-care planning guide, and a career pathway map are provided. This course is designed for experienced home care workers, CNAs, and family caregivers who have completed foundational and hands-on training and are ready to develop advanced and career-level skills. Prior direct care experience is strongly assumed. This course is educational; clinical aspects of end-of-life care, including pain management and medical decision support, must be provided by licensed hospice and palliative care professionals. This course does not substitute for clinical training or licensed healthcare practice.
