About this course
The moment a caregiver helps an older adult transfer from a chair to a walker, assists with a bath, or prepares a meal that meets dietary restrictions, they are in the territory where knowledge without correct technique can cause harm. A transfer performed with incorrect body mechanics injures the caregiver and risks a fall. A meal prepared without awareness of swallowing difficulties is a choking hazard. Systematic procedure, taught before it is practiced, is the foundation of safe, effective care.
By the end of this course you will be able to assist with mobility and transfers using safe body mechanics, complete a personal care routine with attention to dignity and hygiene standards, prepare nutritionally appropriate meals for common geriatric dietary needs, conduct a basic home safety assessment, and document a care session accurately using a daily log format.
What you will learn:
- Safe body mechanics for caregivers: posture, pivot technique, and avoiding caregiver back injury
- Transfer procedures: chair-to-standing assist, walker support, and bed-to-chair transfer with one caregiver
- Personal care assistance: bathing, oral hygiene, hair care, and dressing — technique and dignity considerations
- Fall prevention in the home: environmental hazard checklist and corrective actions
- Nutrition for older adults: caloric needs, hydration, dysphagia awareness, and reading dietary instructions
- Meal preparation procedure: adapting textures, managing dietary restrictions, and kitchen safety
- Medication reminders vs. medication administration: the distinction and the scope of the caregiver's role
- Daily documentation: what to record, how to note changes in condition, and when to flag for escalation
Each module presents the procedure in numbered written steps with a companion checklist for use during supervised training. Worked examples trace a morning care routine from arrival through to departure documentation. A home safety assessment checklist and a daily log template are included for direct use in the field.
This course is designed for individuals enrolled in or preparing for supervised in-home care training, family caregivers supporting an aging relative, and healthcare support workers expanding their knowledge base. Suitable for anyone new to hands-on elder care. This course is educational; in most jurisdictions, formal home care employment requires state or provincial certification, mandatory training modules, and background checks. Clinical tasks including medication administration must only be performed by licensed personnel.
