About this course
Learning a language requires more than reading grammar explanations — it requires the kind of repeated, structured engagement that builds recognition and recall over time. This workbook course provides that structure: each grammar concept is immediately followed by written exercises, vocabulary is introduced through frequency-ranked lists with space for self-testing, and every chapter builds toward applying the material to actual biblical passages.
By the end of this course you will be able to recognize and parse the most common Hebrew and Greek forms in a biblical text, look up and understand lexicon entries for unfamiliar words, translate simple passages from both the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament with the aid of reference tools, and integrate language knowledge into your personal or scholarly Bible study.
What you will learn:
- Alphabet mastery drills for both Hebrew (including vowels) and Greek, with self-testing templates
- Hebrew vocabulary exercises using the 200 most frequent words in the Old Testament, organized by root family
- Hebrew parsing practice: identifying verb stems (Qal, Niphal, Piel, Hiphil) in worked examples from Genesis and Psalms
- Greek vocabulary exercises using the 200 most frequent words in the New Testament, with focus on theologically significant terms
- Greek parsing practice: identifying present and aorist verb forms, nominative and accusative nouns, in passages from John and Paul's letters
- Lexicon navigation: step-by-step exercises using Strong's and BDB for Hebrew and Thayer's or BDAG for Greek
- Passage analysis worksheets: a structured template for working through a short biblical text in the original language, from word identification to syntactical analysis
- Comparative translation exercises: analyzing how lexical choices in the original are reflected — or obscured — in three English translations
Each chapter provides a grammar or vocabulary concept, immediate written exercises with answer keys, and a passage-application section. A recommended weekly study schedule is included, structured to build competence incrementally over twelve weeks.
This course is suitable for students who have completed a foundational biblical languages introduction or who are beginning with strong motivation and willingness to put in regular study. No prior language study experience is required, but consistent practice between sessions is essential.
