Understanding Doulas and Midwives: Roles, Differences, and How They Support Your Birth

The terms doula and midwife are frequently used interchangeably in conversation, but they describe fundamentally different roles with different training, legal scope, and functions. The first reading establishes the midwifery scope of practice across care settings. The second maps the doula model of support and its evidence base. The third places both roles in direct comparison, using a structured comparison matrix and case examples from different birth settings. The fourth addresses how to evaluate your own needs and make a decision. Reflection prompts follow each reading.
