Foundations of Retinal Disease

Retinal disease is a major contributor to vision loss worldwide. Sound practice rests on understanding the anatomy, common disease patterns, and the principles of imaging-based management. This foundational course provides that base. By the end of this course you will be able to describe the anatomy and physiology of the retina, recognize common retinal diseases, identify the role of imaging in retinal practice, and understand the principles of management. What you will learn: - The anatomy and physiology of the retina including macula and periphery - Diabetic retinopathy including classification and management framework - Age-related macular degeneration including dry and wet forms - Retinal vascular disease including vein and artery occlusions - Retinal detachment including risk and presentation patterns - The role of fluorescein angiography, OCT, and OCT angiography in retinal disease - The role of intravitreal injection therapy in modern retinal practice The course uses readings, disease summaries, case examples, and reflection questions. Each module ends with applied exercises. This course is written for optometrists, ophthalmology trainees, and others strengthening retinal foundations. It does not replace supervised clinical training or specialty mentorship. By the end you will have a structured foundation in retinal disease.
