Applied Child and Adolescent Mental Health: Complex Cases and Cross-System Coordination

Complex child mental health cases often involve multiple systems including family, school, healthcare, and sometimes child welfare or juvenile justice. This applied course teaches structured cross-system reasoning with case-based modules. By the end of this course you will be able to coordinate care across multiple systems, integrate trauma-informed considerations, manage transitions into adolescent and young adult care, and respond to crises in age-appropriate ways. What you will learn: - Frameworks for coordinating with schools, including IEPs and 504 plans where relevant - Approaches to trauma-informed care across childhood and adolescence - Approaches to neurodevelopmental complexity including co-occurring conditions - Frameworks for working with family systems including divorce and blended families - Approaches to transitions into adolescent autonomy and emerging adult care - Crisis response frameworks for self-harm, suicidality, and acute behavioral crises within scope - Documentation and communication frameworks for complex cross-system cases The course is structured around case-based applied modules. Each module presents a complex scenario, walks through structured reasoning, and produces a written care plan you compare against the worked-through example. This course is written for mental health clinicians and trainees deepening child and adolescent practice. It does not replace supervised clinical training or licensure requirements. By the end you will have structured frameworks for handling complex cross-system cases and supporting young people through difficult transitions.
