Keeping Advance Directives Effective: Conversations, Updates, and Crisis Use

This applied course teaches you to keep your directives effective across years and during emergencies. By the end of this course you will be able to revisit and update your directives on a regular schedule, run periodic conversations with your proxy and family, ensure documents are accessible to the right people at the right time, and prepare for the actual moment when a directive must be used. What you will learn: - How to schedule periodic reviews tied to life events such as new diagnoses, family changes, or moves - How to update conversations with your proxy as your views and circumstances evolve - How to coordinate documents across hospitals, clinics, and out-of-state care - How to use digital and physical storage so that documents reach the team that needs them - How to brief family members on what the directive does and does not authorize - How to think about specific scenarios that may not be obvious from generic forms - How to act as a proxy for someone else during a real medical crisis The course is structured around six applied modules. Each produces a written artifact: a review schedule, an updated proxy conversation summary, a storage and access plan, a family briefing, a scenario worksheet, and a proxy-readiness checklist. This course is written for adults who already have advance directives in place and for proxies who expect to use them. By the end you will move from paperwork-done thinking to a sustained practice that keeps your directives current, communicated, and ready to function when the moment arrives.
