2 996 Biomedical Devices Design Laboratory Fall 2007

Designing electronics for medical applications requires a unique blend of precision engineering, safety awareness, and robust hardware integration. This written course guides you through the foundational principles of electromechanical biomedical instrument design, showing you how to turn conceptual ideas into safe, functional prototypes. You will transition from understanding basic circuit theory to planning and designing complete sensor-based biomedical systems. By reading detailed explanations and analyzing practical design scenarios, you will grasp how physical physiological signals are captured, conditioned, and processed digitally. What you'll learn: Understand foundational biomedical sensor interfaces and analog signal conditioning; Design operational amplifier circuits to filter and amplify delicate physiological signals; Apply modern low-power microcontroller configurations and wireless communication protocols like Bluetooth Low Energy; Master the essentials of printed circuit board layout, component selection, and prototyping workflows; Analyze safety considerations, power supply isolation, and basic regulatory compliance standards for medical devices. The course begins with core definitions of biomedical signals and fundamental electronic components, then progresses through signal conditioning, microcontroller integration, and practical board layout methodologies. You will work through written design challenges and structural planning exercises to solidify your engineering decisions. This course is designed for aspiring biomedical engineers, hardware hobbyists, and students with a basic background in science or engineering who want to learn medical device prototyping from the ground up. No advanced electronics experience is required. Start reading today to lay the groundwork for your journey into biomedical engineering.
