This comprehensive text-based course guides you through five centuries of dynamic interactions, conflicts, and exchanges that defined the region. By studying these historical patterns, you will gain a clear framework for understanding how domestic developments in China, Japan, Korea, and neighboring regions intertwined with international trade, religious movements, and military encounters. What you'll learn: - Analyze the major geopolitical shifts in East Asia from 1500 to the modern era. - Understand the impact of early modern trade networks, Western contact, and global imperialism on regional autonomy. - Examine the historical relationships, conflicts, and cultural exchanges between China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. - Explore the role of philosophy, religion, and mutual perceptions in shaping diplomatic policies. - Evaluate how historical legacies continue to influence contemporary international relations and modern foreign policy in East Asia.
