18 726 Algebraic Geometry Spring 2009

Are you ready to transition from classical geometric intuition to the powerful language of modern algebraic geometry? Understanding abstract concepts like schemes and sheaves can feel daunting, but a structured, step-by-step approach makes these advanced mathematical tools accessible. This text-based course guides you through the foundational framework of modern algebraic geometry. You will build a rigorous understanding of how algebra and geometry merge, moving from basic topological spaces to the sophisticated language of schemes, morphisms, and sheaf cohomology. What you'll learn: - Understand the core definitions of presheaves, sheaves, and their stalks - Explore the construction of affine schemes from commutative rings - Analyze key properties of morphisms between schemes - Master the foundational concepts of sheaf cohomology and its applications - Apply algebraic techniques to solve geometric problems systematically - Read and interpret modern mathematical literature in algebraic geometry The course begins with essential algebraic and topological foundations, establishing clear definitions before introducing sheaves. From there, you will progress through affine and general schemes, examine morphisms, and conclude with an introduction to cohomology theory. This course is designed for advanced undergraduate students, beginning graduate students, and independent learners with a basic background in abstract algebra and topology who want a gentle, written introduction to modern algebraic geometry.
