Introduction to Matter and Its Properties

Everything around us, from the air we breathe to the devices we use, is composed of matter. Starting with the basics is essential to understanding all branches of physical science. By the end of this course, you will possess a robust understanding of what matter is, how it is defined, and the different forms it takes. You will be able to distinguish between physical and chemical properties and accurately describe the processes that cause matter to transform. What you'll learn: * Define matter, mass, and volume, and the differences between pure substances and mixtures. * Understand the four main states of matter (solid, liquid, gas, and plasma) and the energy required for phase transitions. * Distinguish between physical properties (like density and solubility) and chemical properties (like reactivity and flammability). * Apply the concepts of physical and chemical changes to real-world examples, recognizing when a new substance is formed. * Practice analyzing simple systems to classify types of matter and predict its behavior under changing conditions. The course begins by establishing core definitions and terminology before moving into detailed descriptions of the states of matter and the energy dynamics involved in phase changes. We conclude by focusing on the distinction between observable physical properties and transformative chemical properties. This course is designed specifically for absolute beginners with no prior experience in chemistry or physics. All concepts are introduced from the ground up, requiring only a willingness to read and practice. Start building your foundational knowledge of the physical world today.
