Foundations of Sufi Contemplative Tradition: Mysticism, Dhikr, and the Inner Dimensions of Islam

Sufism is sometimes portrayed as a separate spiritual tradition, sometimes as Islam's mystical heart, and sometimes dismissed as marginal. None of these framings does it justice. Understanding Sufism requires grasping both its deep embeddedness in Islamic theology and law and the distinctive interior orientation that sets it apart from exoteric religious practice. This course offers that grounded foundation. By the end of this course you will be able to explain the historical emergence of Sufism within early Islam, describe the key practices of Dhikr and Muraqaba and their theological rationale, identify the major Sufi orders (tariqat) and their distinct orientations, explain how Sufi thought relates to mainstream Islamic theology, and read primary Sufi texts with contextual understanding. What you will learn: - The Arabic root concept of tasawwuf and the scholarly debates about Sufism's origins in the first Islamic centuries - Dhikr (remembrance of God): its Quranic basis, forms ranging from silent repetition to voiced chanting, and its function in purifying the heart - Muraqaba (contemplative watchfulness or meditation): how it differs from prayer and dhikr and its role in the interior life - The concept of maqamat (stations) and ahwal (spiritual states) as a map of the Sufi path toward closeness with God (qurb) - Major Sufi figures: Rabi'a al-Adawiyya, al-Ghazali, Ibn Arabi, Rumi — and what each represents theologically - The tariqat system: how orders such as the Qadiriyya, Naqshbandiyya, Shadhiliyya, and Mevlevi transmit teaching and practice - Sufi poetry as theological expression: reading Rumi's Masnavi and Hafiz not as secular verse but as contemplative teaching - Historical and contemporary debates about Sufi practice within Islamic legal and theological discourse The course proceeds through a sequence of conceptual readings organized to build from foundational Islamic context outward to specifically Sufi theology and practice.
