About this course
Many people arrive at labor and birth feeling fundamentally uncertain about what is actually going to happen — not just the general outline, but the physiological specifics: what drives contractions, why labor is divided into stages and what each looks like, how the body prepares for birth over the final weeks of pregnancy, and how pain management options actually work. That uncertainty is often a source of fear that evidence-based childbirth education can substantially reduce.
By the end of this course you will be able to describe the three stages of labor and the physiological processes driving each, explain the hormonal cascade that initiates and sustains labor, understand the evidence base and practical considerations for major pain management options, and articulate the key elements of a meaningful birth plan.
What you will learn:
- The hormonal initiation of labor: oxytocin, prostaglandins, and the physiological transition from pregnancy to active labor
- Prodromal and early labor: what it typically looks and feels like, how to identify true vs. false labor, and when to contact your care provider
- Active labor: physiological progress, cervical dilation, and the wide range of normal timelines
- The second stage: fetal descent, pushing, and the mechanics of birth for the birthing parent's body
- The third stage: placental delivery, immediate postpartum physiology, and what happens in the first golden hour
- Pharmacological pain relief options — epidural, systemic opioids, nitrous oxide — how each works and their typical effects
- Non-pharmacological approaches: movement, hydrotherapy, breathing techniques, counterpressure, and the evidence for each
- The core elements of a birth plan: what decisions you can meaningfully make in advance and how to communicate them clearly
This course is structured as detailed evidence-based readings with clear anatomical and physiological explanations made accessible without medical background. Each section includes reflection prompts to help you identify preferences and formulate questions for your care team.
This course is designed for people in the third trimester preparing for birth, and for their support partners. No prior knowledge is required. The content is educational and informational; it does not substitute for individualized childbirth education provided by a certified educator, or for the clinical guidance of your midwife or obstetrician. Birth involves unpredictability, and education supports but cannot guarantee any particular experience.
