AEMT Decision Making in Complex Prehospital Cases

Most AEMT cases follow recognizable patterns. Complex cases require structured decision-making that integrates assessment, intervention, transport, and communication. This applied course teaches you to reason through those cases. By the end of this course you will be able to apply structured frameworks to common complex AEMT presentations, integrate assessment findings with intervention decisions, weigh transport and destination choices, and conduct structured handoffs at receiving facilities. What you will learn: - Decision frameworks for respiratory distress presentations including asthma exacerbation and CHF - Frameworks for differentiating types of shock and prioritizing interventions - Approaches to altered mental status differential and intervention - Recognition and initial management of common cardiac presentations within scope - Approaches to pediatric and geriatric considerations at the AEMT level - Transport and destination decision frameworks including time-critical conditions - Structured handoff communication using standard formats The course is structured around case-based decision modules. Each module presents a complex case, walks through structured reasoning, and produces a written decision rationale you compare against the worked-through example. This course is written for AEMT students and certified AEMTs deepening case reasoning. It does not replace state-approved AEMT training or supervised clinical practice required for certification. By the end you will have structured frameworks for reasoning about complex prehospital cases and for communicating effectively with the broader emergency care system.
