Animal Behavior: Stages of Mental Development and Learning

Have you ever wondered how complex animal behaviors, from navigation to social interaction, develop over a lifetime? Understanding animal psychology is key to unlocking the mysteries of the natural world and evolutionary biology. By the end of this course, you will be able to classify different types of animal behavior based on their origin (innate versus learned) and place them within the established stages of psychic development, giving you a strong foundation in comparative psychology. What you'll learn: * Understand the fundamental definitions and terminology used in ethology and comparative psychology. * Analyze the three main levels of psychic development: sensory, perceptual, and intellectual. * Master the distinction between innate behaviors, such as instincts and reflexes, and acquired behaviors like skills and habits. * Apply the concept of taxis to explain simple, directional movements in various organisms. * Practice classifying complex animal behaviors using a framework based on developmental stage and complexity. The course begins by establishing core terminology and the evolutionary context before diving into detailed explanations of each developmental stage and the mechanisms of behavioral acquisition. You will read detailed explanations and practice applying these concepts through written exercises. This course is designed for absolute beginners interested in biology, psychology, or animal science. No prior knowledge of ethology or comparative psychology is required.
